Tobias Langlotz

Short Bio

I completed my diploma degree in Media Systems (Diplom Mediensystemwissenschaftler) at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. My studies had a focus on Augmented Reality, Computer Graphics and Pervasive Computing. During my studies I worked as a student researcher within the DFG funded projects "HoloGraphics: Combining Holograms with Interactive Computer Graphics", "sARc: Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture" and "PhoneGuide: Mobile Phone Enabled Museum Guidance". I further worked as a teaching assistant for the “Programming languages and Software engineering” class, and as a programmer and system administrator at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry. As part of my studies I was a intern research student at the Osaka University, Japan, from 2004-2005. Since 2008, I am working on my PhD at the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Handheld Augmented Reality. As part of my research I was a visiting researcher at the HITLabNZ (2009) and the HCI group at the University of Otago (2010 & 2011).

Research Interests

My main research interest are location-based mobile interfaces where I work at the intersection of HCI, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision and Pervasive Computing. My PhD work focuses on designing interfaces and prototypes allowing scaleable content creation for Augmented Reality-based information systems (e.g., Augmented Reality Browsers). In particular, I look at interfaces that permit a crowdsourced content creation process by also investigating different information representations and how they are best integrated into a mobile AR system. I'm further interested in spatial AR techniques/applications and projector-camera systems.

Professional

I supervised 10+ Master/Bachelor students and student projects at the TU Graz as well as I co-authored several research grants. Besides, I organized the "Workshop on authoring solutions for Augmented Reality" (held at ISMAR 2011, Basel and ISMAR 2012, Atlanta) as well as the "Winter Augmented Reality Meeting 2013" (WARM13). I was part of the program committee for IEEE ISMAR in 2005 and 2007 - 2009 as well as for ACM OZCHI 2012. I am a regular reviewer for IEEE Virtual Reality, IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality, ACM CHI, Joint Virtual Reality Conference, ACM Siggraph Asia, ACM Virtual Reality Software and Technology, ACM OZCHI, ACM Advances in Computer Entertainment and the Mobile Games Workshop at International Conference on Entertainment Computing. I have also reviewed articles for the Elsevier Computer & Graphics Journal, Computer Graphics Forum, Springer Virtual Reality Journal and Springer Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing. I am a student member of IEEE and ACM SIGCHI.
